My name is Sina, founder of Eco Zeena. I came to the UK nearly seven years ago in 2013 to complete a PhD in palaeoclimate science. Over the years, I made the UK my home and I very much enjoyed my time here. Now is the time for a new chapter in my life as with my husband I will soon be returning to Germany, something I am very excited about. As a result, I have now closed my business Eco Zeena, but have plans to re-establish it in Germany in one way or another. You can follow my journey on social media and my blog on this website.
Personally, I embarked on the journey to reduce my environmental footprint and live more sustainably about ten years ago. Back then, the book ‘The Story of Stuff‘ by Annie Leonard opened my eyes to the impact we have on the planet. It inspired me to strive for sustainability in my life and our society. My lifestyle is still not completely sustainable, but I truly believe that every little sustainable choice makes a difference, for the better.
I founded Eco Zeena in Winchester, UK in 2019 to offer a range of eco-friendly and sustainable products and help people live a more sustainable lifestyle. I became a regular at Winchester market and visited other markets in the area. The market stall allowed me to turn my passion for sustainable living into a business.
If you know me from the market or have shopped with me online, I would like to thank you for your support. It means a lot to me (even now that my shop is closed). Running my own business has shown me how important it is to support small, local businesses. Without your support, we wouldn’t survive! On social media, you can find Winchester’s independent businesses by following #indiewinch.
Here are my favourite independent and sustainable businesses in the city:
From 2013 to 2017, I lived in Newcastle upon Tyne, where I did a PhD in palaeoclimate science (the history of the Earth’s climate) at Northumbria University. Before coming to the UK, I studied Geosciences in Germany to learn more about the planet we live on. My interest in the natural world and its history definitely inspired me to seek a more sustainable lifestyle. I guess studying the past and putting our existence into perspective made me realise that what we have is special. As a result, I don’t think it’s just our responsibility to care for the natural world, but also in our own interest. After all, we depend on it. But my appreciation for the natural world has also shown me something else: When we love something, looking after it goes without saying.
Living more sustainably doesn’t only reduce our environmental footprint, but is also better for our health and well-being. A more sustainable lifestyle reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore our environmental impact. In addition, choosing products made from natural ingredients and materials reduces our exposure to chemicals and waste.
Producing less waste and living more environmentally-friendly has also been shown to make as feel better and happier. Knowing that my choices and actions do not harm the planet feels great! And this is what I would like to share with you with the range of eco-friendly and sustainable products you can find in my online shop.
